Personal Style: Makenzie

Makenzie trying on too high heels!

One of Dena and I’s favorite activities is  shopping! We go to Buffalo Exchange at least once a week, but we sometimes go more than three times! You would think we’d be best friends with everyone there, right? Wrong. We only know a few of the workers on a talking basis. Also, we very rarely buy anything. Mostly we just like to try on a bunch of things. Even though we love to shop together, we have VERY different style (but we both agree we hate spending money!)

My personal style is classic tomboy. I love menswear inspired clothing. I feel most comfortable in oversized button-up shirts and men’s shoes. My favorite accessory is one of my many blazers.

My personal style catchphrase is, “when in doubt, dress like a man.” Before a big event, I usually end up trying on EVERY outfit I own. I end up frustrated and grumpy because I can’t find anything I like. Then, I remind myself of my personal style statement. I put on my favorite men’s inspired shirt, and I’m ready to go.

Blazer: F21, Red Courdory: F21, Shirt: Thrifted, Belt: Gap, Bag: Borrowed

This is a picture of me at the Texas Contemporary Art Fair benefitting CAMH last fall. Do you see any strange similarities between my outfit and the dapper gentleman behind me? When in doubt…

Striped Tank: F21, Double Finger Ring: Urban Outfitters, Necklace: Hand-Me-Down Vintage

In this picture, you can see my 2 favorite accessories. First, my gold basketweave choker necklace. This was my grandmother’s. I rescued it from my little sisters dress up box. It is one of my favorite possessions and it dresses up any outfit. I receive so many compliments on it. Second, my double finger ring. Funny story, Dena and I love to dumpster dive. Dena opened the trashcan outside of Urban Outfitters one day and saw this ring in there. She gave it to me and I’ve been wearing it every day since.

Rolled Shorts: Hand-Me-Down (I think they’re from walmart), Boy’s Blazer: Thrifted, Leopard Lounge, Platform Sandals: Urban Outfitters, Shirt: Thrifted, Sand Dollar, Embroidered Purse: Thrifted, Anthropologie

All time favorite outfit. Men’s shirt, blazer, and rolled shorts. Then I tried to make it girly and fun by wearing my favorite platform sandals. Even though I’m very tall, I love wearing heels. Sometimes I get too shy though and switch to flats. Those sandals are so hard to walk in. I’m always rolling an ankle. I wore them on a date once and they broke right as I walked up to the restaurant. Embarrassing! I made my date wait while I went home to change.

Chambray Shirt: Levi’s, Khaki Shorts: Thrifted, Embroidered Purse: Thrifted, Anthropologie

This is a picture of me during the summer. I love this outfit because it is vintage classic. The chambray shirt is androgynous and comfortable. Those Khaki shorts were once very ugly pants I bought from goodwill with plans to wear as part of my Annie Hall costume. Instead of throwing them away, I turned them into trendy, highwaisted dress shorts! And that purse? My absolute favorite. I almost didn’t buy it. It was $3o, second hand. I’ve never spent that much money on a purse. It was a great purchase. I carried it almost every day until it became too dirty to use.

One thing about me is that I am very hard on my possessions. Nearly every pair of shoes I own is falling apart in some way. My pant hems are fraying. My purses have ripped straps and are full of trash and dirt. My cute lace bras are all ripped up. The leather from my old boots were literally peeling off (my mom made me throw them away). I wish I took better care of my clothes. I just love to wear everything I own!

Wow you look good in heels girl!! But possibly rolling an ankle is a concern!! Dont hurt yourself anymore! haha

Dude you and that guy at the Benefit were totally twins! AHH haha how funny!

I love your love for blazers. I can never bring myself to really try them out because I think they make me look bigger than what I want to appear as..

But over all you have such a fresh, cute, simple, classy look going on!
