Houston Lone Star Performance Explosion. night 2 and 3

2012 March 13

This past weekend, Makenzie and I participated in the first ever biannual Houston Lone Star Performance Explosion 2012. This event was made up of three different venues on three different nights: Diverse Works, Avant Garden, and notsuoH. Each venue hosted four hours of continuous performance art by local and international artists.

photos 1-6 were taken the second night at Avant Garden. In a few words: everyone had plastic bags on their heads and there were cans of hair spray and lighters making fire shooters everywhere

The second piece shown at Avant Garden was performed by an artist from Finland. Luckily Makenzie and I had front row seats.

These last few photos were taken at notsouH’s during the third night. Look closely and you can see me in the background.

I was honored to be a part of this event, although not too experienced as a performance artist (i did a few pieces in high school) i am now able to add Emily Sloan‘s Hatchetation to my resume. For this piece, Emily Sloan played the part of Carrie A. Nation, a temperance leader during America’s prohibition period, hatchet and all. Myself, along with half a dozen other participants became her followers for the night. We banged pots, pans, and cocktail shakers. We passed our brochures warning people of the damage alcohol can do you ones life. We chanted and yelled at cars driving by. We even had a Temperance Pledge Book we were asking individuals off the street to sign. Many people took our picture and laughed at us, but there were also people coming out of the restaurant next door and off the Metro rail that took us very VERY seriously. At the end of our performance the group pushed Ms. Nation into notsuoH’s Bar in a shopping cart where she made a final speech and began smashing liquor bottals at the bar. We quickly processed out and dispersed before any one could hold us responsible for our actions.

Great blurb, I too went to three of the four nights, I was a little sad to find out there was a evening of conversation at the Contemporary Arts Museum that I didn’t know about, the members of Non Grata said it was wonderful….so I am hoping to find people who went to the CAMH talk to get some get feedback on that. As an old school performance artist ( did quite a bit here in Houston 20 years ago) I was thrilled to see the enthusiasm and full spectrum of performance. Cheers to all involved….

i couldn’t agree more – the whole weekend seemed to go just swimmingly. i was aware of the CAMH talk, but busy with midterm studying that night and wasn’t able to attend. if i run across anyone who was there i’ll send them your way for sure.
