Well friends (PS HI IT’S MAK), it was the third tuesday of the month and you know what that means…time for St. Mark’s Between the Bayou’s monthly sustainability film! This month: Vegucated.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKzng1_byMY]

This film followed 3 individuals who decided to give veganism a try to see what changes happened in their life. The film emphasized the health benefits of veganism as well as animal welfare issues. The best part about it was the discussion that followed afterwards. I scribbled a lot in my notebook and I was interested to hear everyone’s perspectives.

Reaction to the film was mixed. Some people called it propaganda, others were totally inspired to become vegan. Here’s what I took away from it: the slaughter house industry is destructive to workers, animals, and small farmers. American’s desire for cheaper meat has created a culture of abuse and destruction. My goal should be to minimize suffering, and one way to do that may be to not support the slaughter industry. But it’s not enough to just stop buying meat, my consumer behavior needs to change. I don’t think there’s anything intrinsically wrong with eating animals, but I do think funding an industry that is a major destructive force does have some severe implications. So my focus after seeing the film is to make small changes in my daily life. Stop taking the free water bottle and remember to bring my own. Support small businesses in Houston. Ride the bus once a week. Things like that.

We’re also going to start having Vegan Tuesdays! Yep, that’s right. Not sure you’re ready to become a strict vegan? Try it out for a day and see what you think. I’m housesitting for two weeks and I made it a point to only buy vegan food for the time I’m there. It’s an interesting experiment that I’m eager to try.

OKAY NOW ALL THAT TALKING IS OUT OF THE WAY: TIME TO GET TO THE PICTURES

Ugh, my outfit was totally babein’. What did I order from Ladybird Food Truck? A grilled cheese. Sorry vegans!

Eek look at that cute little baby! Everyone was trying to snap pictures of the monkey pants.

Here’s Chris, someone who is going to be moving in to the co-op. You can see the baby in this picture playing with th lamp. The baby was fascinated by it!

He he don’t know why Dena’s making this goofy face. Check out Niv in the back as well. Y’all are too goofy.
