robert ellis reunion
makenzie and my college experience was what it was thanks to a few local staples: houston food not bombs, critical mass (2010-2011 before it got so freakin massive), the intersection of dunlavy and westheimer, wild west, yogurt land and their free sample cups, blackhole, and most importantly robert ellis and the boys: whiskey wednesdays. we have hundreds of stories relating to those 10pm-3am wednesday night outings: late night iphoto videos describing dance partners, lists of out “new” old favorite george jones cover songs, grease stains on our jean cut offs from treat-after-dancing jack in the box runs, and holes in our boots from two-stepping/polkaing/waltzing so much.
the weather almost canceled this show, which would have been a major bummer. the opening band: the clarkes, were cute. the crowd was small and the songs were bitter-sweet. and his new song “houston” about leaving this city he called home almost brought on tears. but then i started dancing and felt better. robert ellis, you’ll always have a home in houston and in every old time whiskey wednesday-er’s heart.
